*Find out about Personal trainers in London and the reason for there prices

Is the age old phrase “you pay peanuts you get monkeys” relevant to the fitness and personal training industry? Personally i don’t think its as black and white enough to say yes it is. I’ve seen some truly awful trainers charging vasts amounts ( 3 figures for an hours session in specific personal training hot-spots of London. Chelsea, Kensington etc) and there’s some great trainers achieving fantastic results charging average prices.

What you should be getting is analysis of your body in the beginning – weight, before pictures, body fat, muscle measurements and structural tests. After that your personal trainer should be writing varied programs, full of compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, pull ups and presses depending on your structural needs or imbalances.

You should be getting dietary and meal advice to improve and speed up results. While i have the opportunity, let me just say that “you can’t out train a bad diet!”. Advice on supplements is also key for optimizing results, which ones to take specifically for certain results, which ones are a waste of time etc. Information on intermittent fasting is a plus as well. This should all be included in a personal trainers price in London.

Truth is like any industry prices are going to vary greatly – be aware of the above mentioned facts when looking for a trainer. Ask questions, if the personal trainer is offering 10 sessions for £200 or session prices are £25-35 chances are your not going down the results road.

I have a proven track record in personal training, specialising in fat lossmixed martial arts training (MMA training) and health and fitness for women.  As an independent personal trainer I offer great value for money compared with gym-based trainers, and can come to where you live – saving you time and money. I can transform you – but don’t take my word for it – read testimonials by clients past and present.

Your London Personal Trainer

Gone are the days when you would go down to your local leisure center for 50 p and go for a swim or the odd karate class when you felt like it.

The choice of gyms and ways to keep fit are now vast.
But I’m Big T and I’m “Your London Personal Trainer”.
The personal training sector is splintering off from the main stream gyms. In the last 2-3 years I’ve seen a huge increase in the number of privately run PT studios completely independent from corporate national chain gym.
You no longer need your membership to the likes of virgin active, fitness first or la fitness. You can now just go straight to a personal trainer and there private training studio. For me personally the standard of London personal trainers in these studios is higher than the national chain gyms without a doubt. There are of-course exceptions to this rule (see my other blogs about cowboy/cowgirl trainers) which is why you have to research your trainer thoroughly. Cowboy and cowgirl trainers I cannot stand, they have no program no clue and no result for you!
However ……..
Number 1 reason people quit or never use there gym membership?
They didn’t get a result of any kind. Simple as that.
If you pay for something that implies a result you expect to get one right?
See my testimonial page for my before and after pictures they range from semi-pro athletes to guy an girl off the street – some of the results achieved in as little as 2 weeks. Results are easy when you know how to get them.
Does a national chain gym want you to get a result?
Or does it want your regular direct debit that goes out monthly without you using the gym?
I know how to tailor your personal training program and diet regime just for you and your particular goals.
What works for one might not work for the many – hence why 1 generic training plan with no adaption, observation or testing at the beginning, during and end will achieve very little.
The client needs regular retesting and assessment to asses what I’m doing is working ….. While I have you reading this let me make it very, very clear – any trainer that body fat tests with an electric machine or just puts you on the weighing scales is a COWBOY / COWGIRL and they know it!
My qualifications and education are the gold standard in my industry – continuing education gives me the edge and the ability to answer and solve many of my clients questions and problems. Don’t be fooled by a trainer who can run off a list of pretty sounding qualifications like “Advanced, expert or master personal trainer” these are titles that carry weight, recognition or relevance to the job or industry. London Personal trainers who use these terms are rarely actually the words used.
Top things yourLondon personal trainer should have.
1) Public liability insurance £5 million plus.
2) Holds a, or works with someone who has a valid and up to date first aid cert.
3) They have the gold standard of education and they continue to educate themselves.
4) Most over looked aspect … A personality.
5) A documented history of results

Would i pay for myself if i was looking for a trainer? Well yes i would and i look at every single session i do exactly the same way “would i pay for this right here, right now?”

Recommended Personal Trainers London

Recommended personal trainer London.

Is there value in what i do?

You bet there is, i myself believe in the coaching of fitness that i have a trainer myself for MMA and Muay Thai.
There are now several thousand personal trainers in London and the list is growing daily. No thanks to the conveyor belt of personal trainer courses that churn out fresh from high school fitness instructors and personal trainers. Its making people at the top of these independent education and training courses very wealthy indeed and it is diluting heavily my particular end of my industry – well educated, experienced and can guarantee results.  The sad part is, these courses can be done in as little as 4 weeks. That’s right 4 weeks! and bang you have yourself another batch of personal trainers ready for the meat grinder.
We live in a world where people no longer want to do the time, learn the trade and climb the ladder. I want it and i want it now …… truth is when your dealing with someone elses body and applying exercise and diet advice experience counts. Simple as that.
What works exercise and diet wise for someone reading this wont or might not work for another!
Recommended personal trainer London.
Problem is a course will tell you add 1 + 2 and you’ll get 3, truth is with the human body you might get 5, 8, or 11.
If results do differ and they will everyone is different. Then the trainer has to ask themselves:
Why?
What are the differing issues?
How do i solve the problem?
Long term education and experience can answer these, a 4 week personal trainer course cant, a trainer with a flashy website cant, a trainer who hasn’t continued to educate themselves cant. a trainer who calls themselves by names like “celebrity trainer” “ex-pro athlete” approach with suspicion.
Recommended personal trainer London.

How do i have the edge?

Simple i don’t sit back and think i have made it, i’m done, I’ve read all i’m ever going to need. Bring me the clients, bring them to me.
What i knew 12 years ago when i started out was different to 10 years ago and its very different to today. I don’t know everything how can you. But i have continued to ask questions, continue to read and self educate myself. Education wise many trainers wont like it but a strength and conditioning degree or Charles Poliquin Level 1 and 2 and Bio-signature is a must from a high quality / caliber trainer. In the next few years these will become the gold standard so to speak and will make what separates me from the 4 week course and Fitness First type / collection of trainers.
More and more the public are becoming switched on to what there potential trainers background is and this a good thing.  I cant stand blaggers and falseness – if you don’t have it, train for it or read about it.
Recommended personal trainer London.

How can i get you the body you want?

Take a look at my picture gallery. You cant fake real people and real results. I take pictures of every single client before and after and everyone is retested every 6-8 weeks. Sure the best results end up on the gallery page but no one leaves without achieving something. My name and reputation is linked to your result.
Truth is if i was in your shoes and i was looking for a trainer this how i would break down my search. A good place to start and the choice of many now is a google search. Then take a look at reviews, testimonials and before and after pictures, of and from the trainer.
This isn’t a witch hunt article, but you should be easily able and proud to recommend your trainer to a friend or colleague.

Female weight and fat loss.

So this is in response to an article that was written by a London personal trainer in the fitness industry in relation to female worthy and fat loss…
The trainer in question states that; “It is my personal view that women are better suited to training women”. This is based on what I’d like to ask her?

Then in the article gives no scientific or research based evidence to support this.

So let look at a few factors.

1) There are between 730-850 gyms inside the M25.

2) Every single one will have a team of personal trainers.

3) Average personal training team is made up of say 8-12 trainers in a gym.

4) Female trainers will make up a 2 of those sometimes 3.

It is well known in the industry that there is a shortage of female trainers. So statistically looking at the numbers above if women were apparently far better off training with a female trainer, why have so many male trainers full books? With some of them having a 60-70% female client base ratio. Surely there cant be thousands of women out there all wishing they had a female trainer but just putting up with a male one until one comes along.

In my 11 years of personal training i’ve heard of one inquiry from a woman asking specifically for a female due to religious reasons only. It wasn’t based on the understanding of her “psyche” or her “emotional state”.

What a client does want and what this trainers website seems to lack (how funny) is hard proof of results of any kind. No before or after pictures, no body stats of clients over specific time periods. No hard evidence that what they do with there client  creates results.
Now i would like to pick up on a point made in the article which brings into question the intensity of training received from male trainers

It is rare to see a man training a female client hard enough”

I ran this by the majority of my female clients (while they had time to take breath from being pushed to the edge of there fitness) and guess what they strongly disagreed…………. shock! This really isn’t a male or female thing, this is basically good or bad trainer thing. If you are leaving the gym fresh as a daisy and lightly perspiring while your trainer appears to be sweating more than you from chatting to his colleagues vigorously or from the piping hot cup of coffee he / she carries around like a comfort blanket, then chances are your with the wrong “person”, “personal trainer”, “trainer” – take your pick just don’t say male or female!

Now to my two favorite quotes of the piece that truly speak volumes about the article writers desperation to bang out a non scientific or researched based piece so they can try and claim a few SEO brownie points.

“Women don’t want to look like there male trainers”

Hold the phone this must be where i’ve been going wrong for the last 11 years. There was me thinking female clients wanted to look just like me, with the short brown hair and 2 day stubble effect! On a serious note women should train like men simple as that. It doesn’t work like this:

Boys lift weights
Girls run on treadmills / cross-trainers

They should be lifting as much as they can, controlled with specific protocols for their goals. For more info on these and training see here.

Quote two:
Why find someone that talks German if you talk French?” (By the way i haven’t grammar corrected this quote, especially as my grammar isn’t Oxford degree level)

Well if you want to learn to speak German whats the best thing you can do? Find someone who speaks German, live in Germany and immerse yourself in the culture and the language. Throw yourself in at the deep end.

In conclusion, this is not an article about male of female trainers or a battle of the sexes or very clever twist on the “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” theory. I am simply saying that its about the quality and standard of the trainer and the result that you get as a client, not their sex.

How do you sum up health and fitness for women?

Most female clients that come through my door are looking for weight and fat loss. So what is health and fitness for women? Girls do cardio and men lift weights, right? … WRONG!

First thing I say is – throw out your bathroom scales and concern yourself with body fat only. If your total mass does not decrease but your body fat drops 5-10% in 12 weeks, I have done my job.

Weight loss … or fat loss?

You see, muscle weighs 3 times more than fat! All my female clients lift heavy weights to encourage muscle stimulation, muscle tone and a firmer appearance (rather than what we call in the industry “skinny fat”). This creates a lean, fat-free, toned look, but may mean that the bathroom scales remain the same.

Lifting weights also offsets osteoporosis in women which is a great side benefit.

With this style of training and look comes rapid and efficient fat loss. This means the ‘weight watchers’ style of dieting (where you’re on the scales every 5 minutes) becomes irrelevant. So, unless you are clinically obese, your weekly weight is of no concern to me and it shouldn’t be to you either. It’s just that it has become a must for women to weigh themselves, almost like a female standard.

What’s ‘skinny fat’?

In the personal training industry this term is used for weight loss, but without toning and training the muscle at the same time. What you end up with is something like this:

personal trainer shoreditch

This picture represents a slim lady and I’m sure she’s happy with the weight she sees on the bathroom scales. However what the image says to me is a lack of weight training. No squats, lunges, dead-lifts, hip extensions etc.

So my question would be, is she happy with her bum?

Long distance cardio … or weight training and HIIT?

Girls. Doing long distance cardio is a waste of time. Just think of the thousands of women right now around the world who are toiling away on a cross trainer, treadmill or bike for hours on end, and after several months losing nothing. Long term cardio has been shown to be an inefficient form of weight loss.

You should be doing  a combination of weight training and high intensity cardio (HIIT). This combo is a guaranteed fat stripper.

Now before you rush down your local gym and start throwing weights around, please see a fitness professional for some advice and guidance on how to lift weights. I have seen hundreds of women (over 11 years in the industry), walking round a gym with  a couple of 1-2 kg dumbbells in their hands, doing the occasional bicep curl or tricep kick backs. This can be even more of a waste of time than long distance cardio if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I know we have a DIY culture here in the UK but seriously, see a fitness professional for some expert advice!

Hormones affect body fat!

One important consideration is your hormone balance. I recommend that all female clients have their hormone balance checked out. This can be done via “bio-signature” modulation or through blood testing.

What you eat affects your body composition, but where you store fat and how your body loses it is controlled by your hormones. Control the hormone and you control the fat!

Of course if you’re on the contraceptive pill, this is a major factor. The pill has such an impact on my results with female clients, that I no longer guarantee results with women who are on it. The pill contains around 35-50 micro grams of oestrogen per pill, which massively throws out your oestrogen / progesterone balance. This increases fat storage on your quads, hamstrings and triceps … bingo wings!

It can also be useful to have a food allergy test. This will tell you if you’re becoming inflamed or bloated, or having problems digesting certain food groups.

For more information on personal training for women, please get in touch. For examples of training, take a look at this video.

Why am I still fat? Personal trainer Old street answers.
You work hard in the gym, you watch what you eat, you go running every morning, but you’re still not as lean as you want to be. What gives?

Here are the top 10 suggestions as to why you may not be as lean as you’d hope to be (or take a short cut and get in touch for a free consultation!)

You Eat Too Much Fruit

“Fruit is healthy,” I hear you cry! Sure it is, but it does diddly squat for your fat loss efforts. In a nutshell, the sugar from fruit (fructose) does a very bad job at raising insulin levels. Insulin is required to shove fructose into the muscle as stored energy (glycogen).

Instead, it just lingers around wreaking metabolic havoc via a process known as glycation, whereby the fructose binds to amino acids leading to such lovely things as fat gain and metabolic ageing. Renowned clinical nutritionist Robert Crayhon has said that “Fructose is the guest that won’t go home once the party is over.”

My fantastic diet and meal plan is now available for sale online – it’ll cost you less than a meal out, and is a big step towards shifting that excess fat. So – Why am I still fat? Personal trainer Old street answers.

You Are Lazy

You have been sold the story that a few easy jogs and some low-calorie meals are all you need to be lean. Get real.

If you are aspiring to become a Men’s Health cover model, then you need to graft and work at it — every single day. Three-times-a-week sessions in the gym just won’t cut it, and some of you may even need twice-a-day training. To look extreme, you have to train extreme.

You Obsess Too Much

There is a fine line between dedication and obsession. The former is necessary to transform your physique; the latter will ultimately lead to burn out, elevated cortisol levels and poorer overall condition.

Take a leaf out of the book of men who maybe knew a thing or two about getting in ridiculous shape, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronnie Coleman. Two totally different characters united by their ability to focus completely on the task at hand, and then switch off and relax outside of the gym.

You Don’t Lift Heavy Enough Weights

Heavy weights build muscular physiques. Yes, I know that Olympic gymnasts look great but they are genetically elite midgets who are in fact capable of astounding feats of strength. Don’t pump out sets of 25 reps in the gym; instead, strive to always get stronger and spread out your repetition ranges.

Do workouts of 6 reps per set one week, then 12 reps the next, then 5, 8, 4, and back to 6. Trust me, when I tell you that this is one of the very best ways to develop an impressive body. So – Why am I still fat? Personal trainer Old street answers.

You Have No Knowledge of Hormone Control

If you are overstressed, under sleeping, eating too much sugar, and never have any downtime, then chances are that you are not looking too hot right now. If you can’t get a handle on your own hormones, then good intentions and hard gym work will be for naught.

Educate yourself on insulin, cortisol, growth hormone, and testosterone, and the best ways to optimise your own natural production. I have undergone training in Charles Poliquin’s on his BioSignature Modulation theories — which can really fast-track you down the path of physical excellence – read my post on increasing testosterone and reducing oestrogen for more information.

You Think Fortified Cereals Are “Health Foods”

If you really think you’ll get lean eating cereal, then I have some swampland I’d like to sell you:
Cereal is bad in pretty much every way, bar the taste of course. All the studies from the 1980s that espoused the health benefits of cereal were sponsored by one very large, very well-known cereal manufacturer.

Instead, have eggs and steak for breakfast, and go and buy the excellent Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. Or even better, buy a copy of my diet plan.

You Do Too Much Regular Cardio

We have all seen them, the cardio bunnies toiling away on their treadmills. What we usually don’t see, however, is any change in their physical appearance. This is because the body is a very clever organism and adapts to most forms of cardio in a matter of weeks.

Sure, you will still be working hard, but your metabolism shifts a gear and goes into cruise control rather than working too hard. So, instead of wasting too much time worrying about cardio, simply lift a few more weights, sprint a few more hills and eat a few less carbs.

You Party Too Much

We all need a quick lifestyle check once in a while. If your physique goals are not progressing the way you want them to, then it often pays to examine what is going on in your social life. Just because your buddy is ripped and can get away with a few brews every Saturday night doesn’t mean that you can. In fact, he is the exception and the only thing that counts is you and how different factors impact upon your body.

Late nights, drinking, smoking — all of these will substantively negate your otherwise hard work in the gym and in the kitchen. If a great physique is your goal for the summer, then it’s time to knock the vices on the head f

or a little while. And then, when you do party, think how much fun it will be sporting a new six pack.

You Think Abdominal Training Is Easy

No, it’s not. If done correctly, abdominal training can be excruciating. The concept of banging out 50 quick sit-ups disappeared along with the ozone layer in the 1980s.

Abdominals are actually fast-twitch muscles and this means that relatively low (40 seconds) time under tension is optimal for development and muscular growth. This means 15 reps max.

You Believe the Myth of Discipline

There is no such thing as discipline, all we have is love. Either you love being lean and ripped, or you love burgers, fries and doughnuts. Stop making excuses about having a “lack of discipline” and man up — what do you love the most?
